Daniel 6 reflections
There’s a little line in Daniel 6 that caught my attention. I’ve read it before, but this time it felt louder—almost highlighted on the page.
When the officials are trying to get Daniel in trouble, they run to the king and say:
“Daniel, one of the exiles from Judah…” (Daniel 6:13)
That phrase hit different this time.
Daniel is probably in his 80s at this point. He’s spent nearly his entire life in Babylon. He has served with excellence under multiple kings. He’s been promoted, trusted, relied on, and set apart because of the Spirit of God in him.
And yet…
To the people who wanted him gone, he was still just one of the exiles.
Not the man of integrity.
Not the brilliant administrator.
Not the living example of faithfulness.
Not the trusted leader.
Just an exile.
A label, a tag, from decades ago — a season long past — was the first thing they grabbed when they needed to tear him down.
And isn’t that exactly how the enemy still works today?
Old labels and tags have a way of resurfacing
Even when we’ve grown.
Even when God has changed us.
Even when we’ve been faithful, steady, and walking in obedience.
Someone — intentionally or not — brings up the old version of us:
- “Didn’t you used to…?”
- “Weren’t you the one who…?”
- “Remember when you were…?”
- “Well, you’re not really from here.”
- “You don’t really belong.”
- “You’re not qualified; look at your past.”
And suddenly the progress feels shaky.
The confidence slips.
The calling feels questioned.
Daniel reminds us of something powerful:
People may reduce you to your past, but God never does.
Daniel’s enemies used an old identity to diminish a current calling. But here’s what they didn’t understand:
What they saw as a disqualifier was the very thing God used to position Daniel for influence.
He wasn’t in Babylon by accident.
He wasn’t promoted by coincidence.
His “exile” status wasn’t a weakness — it was the backdrop that made God’s work through him unmistakable.
And Daniel didn’t waste one second trying to correct the label.
He didn’t defend himself.
He didn’t say, “Actually, I’ve lived here longer than any of you!”
He didn’t argue his résumé or justify his promotions.
He let his life speak.
He let his integrity speak.
He let his loyalty to God speak.
And God did the vindicating.
When someone brings up who you used to be…
Let it remind you of Who you belong to now.
Let it remind you that God can take any season — even the ones marked by loss, failure, relocation, hardship, or change — and turn it into a launching point for purpose.
Let it remind you that your identity is secure in Christ, not in the opinions of people who didn’t witness the work God has done in you.
If old labels resurface, they are simply proof that:
- You have grown.
- You have changed.
- You have outlived who you used to be.
- And someone feels threatened by the favor on your life.
You don’t need to fight the label. Just stay faithful.
God will take care of the rest.
Just like He did for Daniel.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for the reminder that my identity is rooted in You, not in the labels others give me. When old names, old seasons, or old mistakes try to rise up and define me, help me respond with quiet faithfulness like Daniel did. Strengthen me to stay steady, to keep walking in obedience, and to trust that You are the One who defends, promotes, and positions me. Remind me that every part of my story — even the painful parts — can be used for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
