Set Your Mind on Things Above: What That Looks Like in Today’s World

Colossians 3:2 (NIV): “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

Have you ever caught yourself getting wrapped up in something — a project, a purchase, a post — and then realizing how small it feels later? I have. It’s so easy to fix our eyes on earthly things because they’re right in front of us. They flash across our screens, fill our schedules, and promise a quick hit of satisfaction.

But Paul’s reminder in Colossians 3:2 stops me in my tracks. He’s not just talking about ignoring the world — he’s inviting us to lift our gaze. To choose focus over frenzy. To trade temporary for eternal.

So what does that even look like today — when we live in a world that measures value in likes, followers, and square footage? Let’s unpack it.

Setting Our Minds on “Things Above”

When we “set our minds on things above,” we intentionally focus on what reflects God’s heart — not just in theory, but in how we live, love, and lead. These are things that draw us closer to Christ and shape us into His likeness.

Here are a few examples of “things above” we can pursue today:

  • God’s Character: Lean into who He is — love, mercy, justice, truth.
  • Spiritual Growth: Make room for prayer, worship, and time in His Word.
  • Eternal Perspective: Remember this world isn’t home; we’re just passing through.
  • Gratitude & Contentment: Celebrate blessings instead of striving for “more.”
  • Compassion & Service: See others through His eyes — and act on it.
  • Forgiveness & Grace: Let go of offense before it hardens your heart.
  • Truth & Wisdom: Let Scripture guide your steps more than social media trends.
  • Humility & Surrender: Step off the stage and let God lead.
  • Faith, Hope, Love: The trio that never goes out of style.

These are the things that steady us. They root us in what’s real when everything else feels loud and temporary.

Earthly Distractions We All Battle

Let’s be honest — keeping our focus “above” isn’t easy when below is so noisy. The world is really good at offering shiny distractions. And sometimes, they’re not even bad things — they just become big things.

Here are a few that sneak in quietly but pull us off course:

  • Success & Status: Defining worth by titles or numbers.
  • Materialism: The constant need to upgrade.
  • Perfectionism: Curating a highlight reel instead of living authentically.
  • Comparison Culture: Measuring our joy by someone else’s chapter.
  • Busyness: Filling every minute to feel important.
  • Approval Addiction: Living for likes instead of God’s “Well done.”
  • Financial Gain: Trusting the paycheck over the Provider.
  • Fear & Control: Trying to fix what only God can redeem.
  • Entertainment Overload: Numbing with noise instead of resting in His presence.

None of these things will last. They might feel urgent, but they’re not eternal.

A Gentle Reorientation

Setting our minds on things above doesn’t mean ignoring life’s responsibilities or joys. It means seeing them through heaven’s lens.

You can still work hard, love your family, enjoy beautiful things — but when your heart’s anchored in eternity, the temporary won’t control you. You’ll make decisions out of peace, not pressure. Out of calling, not comparison.

Reflection

Take a quiet moment today and ask yourself:
👉 “What has my mind been set on lately?”
👉 “Are these things leading me closer to Jesus — or just keeping me busy?”

Prayer

Lord, lift my eyes above the noise. Teach me to see my life from Your perspective. Help me set my mind on what matters most — on who You are and the work You’re doing in me. Amen.
