Bold as a Lion: What Proverbs 28:1 Really Means for Us

An illustration of a lion standing on rocks with the words 'BOLD Like a Lion...' above and below it, set against a gradient yellow background.

Have you ever had one of those days where fear feels louder than faith?
Where you second-guess yourself, wonder if you’re doing enough, or feel like you’re tiptoeing through life trying not to mess anything up?

I’ve been there more times than I can count.

That’s why Proverbs 28:1 stopped me in my tracks this week:

“The wicked flee though no one pursues,
but the righteous are as bold as a lion.”

I used to read this verse and think, Bold? Like a lion? Me?
But the more I sit with it, the more I realize:
God isn’t telling us to roar our way through life.
He’s inviting us to walk with a quiet courage that flows from being aligned with Him.

Boldness Begins in the Heart

A lion doesn’t panic at every rustling leaf or run from things that aren’t there.
But the verse says the “wicked” do exactly that — they flee though no one is chasing them.

Why?
Because guilt creates fear.
Fear creates running.

But the righteous — those who walk with God, seek Him, and realign their heart when they fall — have nothing to run from. They’re not operating from guilt or pretending. They carry a confidence that only comes from knowing:

“God and I are good. I’m safe in Him.”

Boldness Isn’t Loud — It’s Steady

For years I thought boldness meant personality strength: being outspoken, fearless, or naturally brave.

But biblical boldness looks more like:

  • steady obedience,
  • quiet confidence,
  • moving forward even when uncertainty lingers,
  • trusting God more than your feelings,
  • showing love when frustration would be easier.

It’s not about being the loudest voice in the room.
It’s about being rooted enough in Christ to stand firm when everything around you feels shaky.

Boldness Comes From Knowing Who You Belong To

A lion doesn’t question its identity.
It doesn’t apologize for its presence.

And friend, neither should you.

Not because you’re perfect.
Not because you “feel” bold.
But because the Lion of Judah lives in you, strengthens you, and equips you for every place He leads you.

Boldness isn’t a personality trait.
It’s a spiritual posture.

It’s saying:
“I won’t shrink back. God has called me here, and He walks with me.”

For the Women Who Feel Tired, Unsure, or Not Enough

You don’t have to manufacture courage today.
You don’t have to force confidence.
You don’t have to pretend you aren’t weary.

Your boldness comes from Him.
And He is more than enough.

If you’re facing something new, something heavy, or something overwhelming, take this verse with you:

The righteous are as bold as a lion.
Not because they roar the loudest —
but because they walk with the One who never leaves them.

A Prayer for Today

Lord,
thank You for calling me into a boldness that doesn’t come from my personality, my strength, or my ability, but from Your presence. Help me to walk in confidence today — not a confidence rooted in performance, but in who I am in You.
When fear rises, steady my heart.
When doubts whisper, remind me of Your truth.
Teach me to move forward with the quiet courage of a lion who knows who her Father is.
Strengthen me, guide me, and make me bold for the places You’re leading me.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
